Ramasastry, Associate Professor and Swarnajayanti Fellow, Dept. of Chemical Sciences, IISER Mohali<\/p>\n\n\n\n Title of Talk: <\/strong>The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2021 and the Science Behind<\/p>\n\n\n\n Guest of Honour: <\/strong>Prof. Sudeshna Sinha, Dept. of Physical Sciences & Deputy Director, IISER Mohali<\/p>\n\n\n\n Abstract of the Lecture: <\/strong>The 2021 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded jointly to Professor Benjamin List from Max Planck Institute for Coal Research, M\u00fclheim an der Ruhr, Germany, and Professor David W. C. William from Princeton University, New Jersey, USA for the \u201cdevelopment of asymmetric organocatalysis\u201d. Exactly 20 years ago, in 2001, the Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to Professors Barry K. Sharpless, William S. Knowles and Ryoji Noyori, for their work on \u201cchirally catalyzed hydrogenation and oxidation reactions\u201d. The 2005 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded for the \u201cdevelopment of the metathesis method in organic synthesis\u201d [metal catalysis], and the 2010 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for \u201cpalladium-catalyzed cross couplings in organic synthesis\u201d. Thus, these four Nobel Prizes in Chemistry in this century so far indicates the significance and relevance of \u2018chiral synthesis\u2019 and \u2018catalysis\u2019 to academia and industry.
